RAISING AS A FREE SYNTACTIC OPERATION: EVIDENCE FROM SERBIAN

چکیده

This paper examines the syntactic properties of Serbian modal verb trebati ‘need’, which appears in environment ‘NP – ‘need’ finite da-clause’. I show that is a raising and preverbal NP (raised) subject. Trebati (φ-)agrees with only optionally, surprising since other verbs agree their subjects obligatorily. Furthermore, subject free to remain embedded clause, suggesting operation not triggered by need satisfy unvalued features on matrix T (contra e.g., Chomsky 1981, 2008). instead propose A-movement (of this kind) ‘free’; more precisely, it fully optional, can occur at any stage derivation (or not), constrained requirement output be well-formed. analysis accounts for full range data trebati, but also applied English-style constructions.

Syntactic Unification as a Geometric Operation in Free Modules over certain Rings

We have shown elsewhere how to introduce a concept of syntactic unification when terms are taken as the elements in a free module and established the link between both unification concepts showing that, under certain reasonable hypotheses, they are completely equivalent. Here we show how syntactic unification of terms may be viewed as the intersection of certain subsets in a free module, which ...

The Subjectival Surface-Syntactic Relation in Serbian

The paper focuses on the notion of (surface) syntactic subject in Serbian within the syntactic dependency framework of the MeaningText linguistic theory. Properties of the subject are described and its text implementations illustrated with data from a variety of contemporary texts. 1 The Problem Stated The aim of this paper is to describe and illustrate, from a syntactic dependency viewpoint, t...

Degree of Optimality as a Measure of Distance of Power System Operation from Optimal Operation

This paper presents an algorithm based on inter-solutions of having scheduled electricity generation resources and the fuzzy logic as a sublimation tool of outcomes obtained from the schedule inter-solutions. The goal of the algorithm is to bridge the conflicts between minimal cost and other aspects of generation. In the past, the optimal scheduling of electricity generation resources has been ...

Where's Φ? * Agreement as a Post-syntactic Operation

This paper develops an argument that agreement (in particular NP-predicate agreement) is a morphological and not a syntactic phenomenon. Narrowly, I argue against the proposition that the configurational/positional licensing of NPs (what was considered to be the domain of Case Theory in the LGB framework of the 1980s) involves checking/matching/valuing of Φfeatures (person, number, gender) in t...

Neg-raising and Aspect: Evidence from Mandarin

Two canonical negatives in Mandarin, mei and bu, display an asymmetry with respect to the presence of negraising inferences. In particular, mei prefers non-neg-raising readings, while bu, unless attaching to a functional category, is forced to be interpreted as neg-raising. This paper aims to explore an approach to address this asymmetry based on interactions between negation and aspect in both...
